Bread and cereals

Bread, grains and cereals are in this group.
According to Canada’s Food Guide, you should eat 4 servings or more each day.

One serving could be any of the following:

  • 1 slice of bread
  • 1 bowl of breakfast cereal
  • 1 half cup of noodles, macaroni, rice or grits. (about the size of a scoop of ice cream). A typical plateful of spaghetti would be 2 or more servings.
  • 1 pancake, waffle, tortilla or slice of corn bread
  • 1 biscuit
  • 5 crackers

The foods in this section all have lots of fibre in them. Fibre is good because it helps stop intestinal infections and cleans your colon.


  1. The best way to get fibre is by eating whole grains like brown rice, millet, quinoa, buckwheat, oats and barley.
